City denied win at the death

Chichester City Ladies will look to build on picking up their first point of the season – but it could have been so much more as they were denied at the death in Gillingham.

Sadie Blakely has had a tough start to life in charge of the Oaklands Park side, losing her first five matches in the National Southern Premier.

With no points and only one goal to their name, Chi’s new management team had a tough task in keeping the confidence of a young side high.

But things looked to be taking a positive turn in north Kent when an excellent strike from skipper Megan Fox gave City the lead.

With time ticking down, Chi looked to be on their way to all three points in front of a healthy crowd at Priestfield.

But, in a cruel twist of fate, the home side netted deep into injury time to ensure both sides shared the spoils.

The result leaves Chi sitting third bottom in the 12 team division with just a single point to their name.

Things do not get easier for Chi as Sunday sees them welcome fourth-place Watford to Oaklands Park (2pm).

The Hornets picked up a good point against former Super League side Yeovil last time out, drawing 2-2.

Chi will have fond memories of taking on the Hertfordshire side, defeating them 1-0 in the league just five months ago.

But that was a very different Chi side, one that was full of experienced players who were still mounting a promotion push deep into the season.

With the majority of that squad now gone, Blakely must rebuild with the emphasis on bringing through players from the club’s successful development sides and giving them a taste of senior women’s football.
