A Chichester company has been nominated by the city’s MP as her constituency responsible business champion 2019.
Gillian Keegan has chosen Covers, which will be entered into a competition to become the national responsible business champion 2019.
There are a range of criteria that a business needs to meet to be nominated, such as community work, the environment and investing in employee training.
Mrs Keegan visited the company last year where she toured their Chichester shop, yard and workshops.
She said she was impressed with their efforts to be a more sustainable business and their extensive staff development programmes.
Rupert Green, chairman of Covers, said: “All of us at Covers are excited to have been nominated by our MP into this national competition.
“We are grateful to Gillian for recognising the hard work we do to support our staff, the local community and the wider environment.
“We’re looking forward to representing Chichester at the awards ceremony in the House of Commons.”
Mrs Keegan added: “There are so many fantastic businesses in my constituency so picking just one to nominate was not an easy challenge.
“On my visit to Covers last year I saw for myself their dedication to sustainable business practices.
“This, combined with their relentless support of apprenticeships and in-work training, left me really impressed. Since 2016, they have trained 27 apprentices and last year their staff undertook over 1,000 courses.
“Covers have been in Chichester for over 170 years and they really work to support the community, especially local charities, matching staff fundraising and donating materials for projects.
“So I wish them the best of luck in the competition and am proud to have such a fantastic business to nominate for Chichester.”
