After last week’s bubbly extravaganza, I turn my attention this week to white and red wines of particular note which are currently on sale.
A return trip to Majestic at Chichester beckoned and off I went in my avowed quest. Two added advantages of shopping at Majestic are the quality of the staff (notably Becky and Charlotte) and the fact you are able to taste some of the wines for sale in a most relaxed and informal setting.
I decided to sample the Montagny 1 er cru Les Millieres 2014 and was bowled over by its freshness, balance and citrussy lightly buttered flavours.
This is a delightful example of an oak-free white burgundy and presents as pleasingly soft on the palate with peach, pear and acacia aromas. One to try for the competitive price of 9 99 if you buy six or more bottles (any mix of bottles).
Transferring next to the Italian wine section, I ventured upon a wine I had already sampled at hosts Paul and Lynne at a recent barmy barbecue (superb food!), namely a Passimento Bianco 2015 Pasqua. This wine has universal appeal and the Garganega grapes are dried before vinification, thus concentrating the sugars to produce a rich, smooth wine with tropical fruit and peach flavours to the fore.
For any cocktail drinker this would be a good introduction to wine. At £8 99 this wine is a memorable experience and the red version is decidedly velvety and dry with the same smoothness achieved by the drying process. A playful little number to be consumed at leisure —enjoy the last vestiges of summer !
