Defeat for Goodwood

Goodwood (259-9) lost to WPP (264-6) in a 45-over game. As WPP were two short Goodwood lent them Peter Lamb and Nick Smith. WPP batted first and Lamby opened and made 20 before being caught by Matt Geffen on the long on boundary off the bowling of Paul Terry. Goodwood did well early on and at 66 for 4 WPP were in bother. However the Ugandan No.5 SSebanja and their had hitting No. 6 H Luff had other ideas. With a wet ball from the constant drizzle, a skiddy pitch and Johnny Heaven (1 for 18) and Terry (2 for 27) bowled out Goodwood were now up against it. Play stopped for lunch with WPP on 130 for 4 off 33 overs then WPP added 134 in 12 overs. James Mayne, Steve Dudman and Freddie Geffen (14-year-old cousin of Matt) bore the brunt. Mayne did remove the two protagonists but WPP still managed 264 for 6 off their 45 overs. Sadly the weather did not improve and WPP also had to bowl and field in miserable conditions. Will Futcher and Paul Terry opened and batted rather well and put on 129 for the first wicket before Paul was caught by Nick Smith for 60. Will Futcher went on to make brilliant 86. John Clifton made a run a ball 29 and Freddie Geffen 25 (0ff 21) but after that Goodwood struggled to maintain the scoring rate required. Matt Geffen and Steve Dudman briefly looked like they could get Goodwood home but in the end Goodwood finished on 259 for 9 off 45 overs. It was probably one of the best games of our season, just a shame about the wet conditions. This was Goodwood’s first defeat on a Sunday since the 22nd May!
