We are heading for the provinces this week, with a visit to the main Co-op at Rose Green. Here you can purchase a very classic bottle of Sancerre for £9.99,Chateau de Chauvenay – refreshingly clean on the palate and subtle in terms of flavour. If you only want to spend about a fiver, I would recommend the Calvet Muscadet 2015, ideal as an accompaniment to any seafood and good value for a Muscadet which should not offend the palate! The store also have on offer at £4.99 a Spanish Vina Sol which is one of the few Spanish white wines I like. If you change continents, there is an offer on Dream Weaver Australian Chardonnay at under a fiver – this wine is well-rounded and would be an ideal picnic or party wine! In terms of Australian Chardonnay the Signal Post white and red Shiraz are both good and when they come on offer at about a fiver represent excellent value for money! Back into just outside town at Lidl I recently tried two riojas and a Bordeaux superieur. The French 2014 example is a snip at the price and will not disappoint, whilst the Comde de Altava Rioja 2010, £5.99, has hints of cream soda and the Cepa Lebrel Reserva 2011, at a mere £5.29, is my recommendation of the week for its dryness and great value given it is a Reserva. Happy imbibing!
