Christmas at Chichester Festival Theatre is special. The famous stage is given over to Chichester Festival Youth Theatre, whose wonderfully imaginative productions are treated just like a main Festival show – they are professional productions that just happen to have a cast exclusively of young people.
Lucy Betts, director of this year’s production of Sleeping Beauty, was herself a member of the Youth Theatre between the ages of seven and 20. It is written by Rufus Norris, who is now director of the National Theatre.
This version of the fairy tale will surprise people who only know the Disney film. It’s a splendidly entertaining and mischievous adventure which ventures beyond the usual ‘happy ever after’ ending.
“It’s just nuts, I love it!,” says Lucy, “It’s based on the original French fairy tale so there are elements that are the same: there’s Beauty who is asleep, there’s a prince who kisses her to wake her up; but there are twists and turns along the way, so it’s not always what you expect. What’s lovely is that because it’s so silly and funny, the poignant moments really strike a chord.”
Lucy also promises it will be thrilling to look at, with set and costumes by the renowned designers, Simon Higlett and Ryan Dawson Laight.
“The set is totally different to any Youth Theatre set we’ve ever had – there are a few surprises! The same with the costumes; Ryan is really pushing it to the limit of the concept we’ve come up with and it’s so inspirational.”
Sleeping Beauty is perfect for ages 7+. It runs from December 15–30. Ticket prices start from £10.
